CIX is seeking registration as Canada’s newest innovative Alternative Trading System, built to deliver a modern, transparent, and efficient marketplace for Canadian equities and listed products. We are a lean, entrepreneurial team where every member directly impacts how our markets operate.
The Role
We are looking for a System Administrator to manage, monitor, and secure the infrastructure supporting CIX’s trading platform. This role focuses on Linux server environments, open source as well as custom applications, and automation, ensuring high availability and compliance with regulatory requirements.
The System Administrator will work closely with engineering, operations, and network teams to ensure stability, security, and scalability of the platform.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage Linux-based servers (installation, configuration, monitoring, patching, and tuning).
- Deploy and maintain applications, APIs, and gateways critical to trading operations.
- Implement system monitoring, alerting, and log management for proactive issue detection.
- Automate routine tasks (provisioning, patching, backups) using scripting and orchestration tools.
- Ensure compliance through system logging, audit trails, and data retention policies.
- Support disaster recovery and business continuity testing.
- Provide Tier 2/3 support for system-level incidents and outages.
- Support members within the operations team with day to day operations, database management and quality assurance testing as required.
- Open to flexible work hours as needed based on extended hours trading.
- Other duties as assigned, supporting CIX technology and operational needs.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related discipline.
- 3–5 years of experience in Linux system administration (essential).
- Strong scripting skills (e.g. Bash, Python, Ansible, or similar).
- Experience with monitoring and observability platforms (e.g. Grafana, Prometheus, ELK, Splunk).
- Database management, including administration, optimization, expertise in querying, archiving, and backup (specifically with open-source DBs such as PostgreSQL, ClickHouse, and Influx)
- Understanding of cybersecurity practices (patching, access control, intrusion detection).
- Ability to troubleshoot under pressure in a live trading environment.
- Experience working at an ATS, Exchange, or broker/dealer strongly preferred.
Nice to Have
- Knowledge of networking fundamentals (TCP/IP, firewalls, VPNs, VLANs).
- Familiarity with virtualization, containerization, and orchestration (VMware, Docker, Kubernetes).
- Experience with FIX protocol or trading platform operations.
- Exposure to market data systems or low-latency infrastructure.
- Familiarity with incident response, DDoS protection, or colocation environments.
